Male Elected Homecoming Queen at Some Lame University

Man... just what I needed to validate my thoughts on the recent intellect of society. This just irks me and depresses me all at the same time. Why don’t our differences make it a beautiful world?

St. Cloud State University students Thursday elected a man as homecoming queen.

Fue Khang, a student from Minneapolis who serves on the student government, will represent the university as homecoming royalty.

It is the first time since 1940, when homecoming royalty were first selected, that a man has been crowned queen, said Marsha Shoemaker, a university spokeswoman.

Wow the first time in that many years! Now I see what a problem this was. I cant believe it was so hard for a man to win homecoming queen. Finally the door has been opened!!

His nomination was sincere, student government President Hal Kimball said.

Kimball said the student government does not support gender stereotypes.

"We don’t like putting people in a box," Kimball said. "We don’t discriminate. It’s a beautiful world."

"...student government does not support gender stereotypes." "We don’t discriminate. It’s a beautiful world."

I suppose then the student government is busy removing the discriminating separate male and female bathrooms and discriminating titles like “king” and “Queen”, “male” and “female” "he" and "she".

Reminds me of when West Virginia University (WVU) President’s Office for Social Justice (OSJ) outlawed "heterosexism," and instructed students and faculty to "use language that is not gender specific."

The OSJ informed students and faculty that, "Instead of referring to anyone’s romantic partner as 'girlfriend' or 'boyfriend,' use positive generic terms such as 'friend,' 'lover,' or 'partner.' Speak of your own romantic partner similarly."

The code concluded with notice of penalties that ranged "from reprimand ... to expulsion and termination, and including public service and educational remediation."

Hal here, from St. Cloud State University, is saying that it’s Stereotypical to think of a Queen as a female and that such a stereotype (saying a Queen refers to the gender female only) is a horrible thing.

According to the Student Governments Logic we should be calling President Hal Kimball a female as not to put a gender stereotype on the fact that he is male ONLY. By removing the discriminating stereotype of referring to males as men in Hal’s view that makes it a “beautiful world”.

But then what of facts? Fact is, a Queen is female and man is male. A king is male, a price is male, a princess is female, etc. Hal (we assume) is male only. But apparently the concept of something being male ONLY or female ONLY is putting people in a box. Well isn’t life horrible for putting me in this box of being male ONLY.

Why doesn’t diversity make it a beautiful world? Gender roles support and uplift diversity. Gender roles celebrate our diversity; that everyone is different and has a special purpose.

Male and Female together, the unity of the two, are “Man” (Mankind, One). They compliment one another like a perfect beautiful song. Male and Female have different strengths and weaknesses and neither male nor female is not one greater than another.

Male and female are very different and recognizing and celebrating in life those differences, and each of these genders roles, is what makes this a beautiful world.

We are a society like the society in Jeremiah's day. We should literally weep for the impending judgement of God.

I don't think SCSU students' thoughts went much deeper than phoenetics when they cast their ballots for male homecoming queen Fue Khang.

Nice fly off the handle, though, righty. It's good practice.

700 of 15000 students voted for homecoming king/queen. I don't think the students really gave a rip and I can bet you next year voter turn out is a damn site stronger than 5%.

Is SCSU non-voter (DON'T BLAME ME!!) saying that people just think Fue Khang is somehow a pun or play on words?

SCSU non-voter (DON'T BLAME ME!!) you are right, I agree that they didn't think to hard about it, and its clear that most likely the students don't care much about it either.

My rant was inspired around Hal Kimball's quote and the ridiculous things like this going on around college campuses. The students might not care about it, but dumb comments like that from the highest representative of your student body does reflect on the students and the school. That's just the reality of it.

"righty"? cute... When is celebrating diversity right-wing? If it makes you feel cool to label people go right ahead. But know that I don't take partisan sides like that. I make an effort to stay in the realm of reason and care more about coming up with actual answers to things than applying labels to everyones views. Its better to listen to all ideas and come up with real solutions than to label people and walk away. "Left" and "Right" who freaking cares?

So what if we don't agree with Hal Kimball. What about the SCSU students who voiced their opinions by selecting who they wanted as homecoming queen.

Let Hal know he doesn't speak for you. If you don't agree with him and don't like the imagine and ideas that his administration stands for then vote him out.

Best thing you can do is be vocal and honest and don't let stuff you don't agree with slide by.

I think too much of this goes on because we are willing to let it "slide by" and the only message that sends is it must be ok and everyone must like it.

I do want to say I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to post and come here. You all are always welcome.

If you find any cool news or info feel free to email me and share.

Thanks!

you are all ridiculous ... as news reporters swarmed campus today everyone just pointed at them and laughed. this is news? go report something that matters, like the 400 tons of bomb materials missing in iraq.

guess what, scsu is not the first school to ever do this. not even the first school in central minnesota (university of minnesota-crookston did the same thing).

Correction - i apologize.

it was U of M - Morris

haha the first school to do this? not even close that is for sure.

My post was about Hal's lame thinking. Its not about this being news worthy over something else.

This is not the most important problem out there. Try hunger, homelessness, addiction, war and death, the evil actions of corporations, etc..etc...all MUCH more important.

I didn't post about this stupid homecoming queen guy because its more important than all those other things, I did it because mindless thinking like this interests me.

You will notice the topics and subjects of my posts are not about what is most important but what I find interesting.

If something hits a nerve I rant on it. If I find something cool I post on it.

Just because its not the MOST important doesn't mean its a non issue either.

Your school's student government say they don't support gender stereotypes; a man is elected as homecoming QUEEN. According to your university it would be discriminating to only have women as a QUEEN and a man as a KING.

Not the MOST important thing in news by far, but defiantly one of the funniest.

It’s a beautiful world.

To rely on the media to give an accurate portrayal of what is happening at St. Cloud State University and the many issues surrounding the homecoming elections is just plain stupid. Not all students were laughing as news crews came to campus, some gathered to show their support for all the candidates who were elected. I was proud to be one of those students and I'm sickened by the homophobic and hateful speech that is sprouting up all over campus and in the greater St. Cloud area. This is the year 2004; and small-town MN needs to wake up!!

OK... it looks like we are getting some SCSU folks posting here, and rather than enlightening us, they are lamenting the tone of the discussion.

Give some facts that we can't see.... Tell us the real truth of this matter. All anyone can see looking into this world is that for some reason a guy with a name that can easily be punned decided to run for the office of Queen. He is a guy, the word queen is female, the word king is male, and the word royal is gender neutral. (although it traces back to the Latin word for king)

From what anyone outside SCSU can see, you have a guy who is either a big joker, or actually thinks that somehow getting rid of ''gender stereotypes'' is a noble (which is from the Latin nobilis, to know) thing.

I don't know one woman who wouldn't like to be appreciated and treated as if she is wearing a crown, and I don't know a guy who shouldn't make a woman feel that way.

If this guy (Fue Khang) wants to make a statement, why not say how much he appreciates the things that women bring to humanity?

We are in fact men and women, and we have great balance, chemistry and traits that can support one another. I guess if wearing a dress helps, then do it, but at least make sure you match, and hopefully the king isn't wearing the same outfit.

The moral majority is getting their panties in a bunch over the male homecoming queen?

Five bucks says if this was a woman wanting to be the football team's captain, womens' groups would be pushing behind her so hard, we'd never hear the end of it.

I think it is only ok if Fue Khang is a drag queen.

(I'm semi-joking here)

I agree that male and female differences are beautiful and to be celebrated, but I guess the point is that they are not the only exclusive differences that exist. We should be celebrating the breadth of difference not just that which is closest to who we are. I think you are misled, somehow, into thinking that by celebrating the diversity of difference out there, those identities which you hold nearest and dearest are threatened, somehow. Why is that? Why does the existence of gay or transgendered or stereotype-breakers threaten the "norm?" Sure. . .but only if you believe it does and therein one has to question why external factors have such a stronghold on you. You should feel no more threatened by the recognition of other gender types than my ordering pistachio ice cream at Baskin Robbins "threatens" your preference for chocolate or vanilla. This homecoming response (not just here but everywhere else) is more a measure of the people observing it and what's going on with THEM rather than the people directly at the center of it.

Great site, was just reading and doing some work when I found this page

Fue Khang was ELECTED as the homecoming queen. Student Government did not annoint him, he was ELECTED by his peers. It was a democratic process. If you do not beleive that gender roles are an issue, you live a muddied OK pasture. Think outside the box for once and see the world for what it really is...

What does he being elected have to do with it?

What are the "issues" with gender roles that I apparently don’t get?

What is wrong with men and women being different?

So are gender roles bad?

If gender roles are NOT bad then there is nothing wrong a Queen staying a female title. A queen is descriptive of a female not a male. That definition has not changed no more than female is still not a word for male; man is still not a term for woman, boy is not a word that means girl.

There are males and there are females. It’s extremely rare, to say the least, that a person would be 100% equally a male and female biologically, you are going to fall on one side or the other.

People can call themselves whatever they want. You could walk around telling people you are a female moose for all anyone cares, but biology and science are just that and the fact is there are terms we use to describe gender and for good reason.

If queen should be both male and female then why have the terms male and female? Do you see what you are saying?

I would have to assume by your remarks that you don’t call a male a man and a female a woman correct?

If you do delineate between these genders then you prove my point and are a hypocrite for supporting the idea that a QUEEN should be both male and female and that gender roles should be blurred yet still term them differently.

If one term should be changed then why not all of them, why single out Homecoming Queen? It's time you re-examine what constitutes thinking outside the box. I think you will find you are inside one.

It’s funny to me that when someone simply disagrees with something instantly they are 1.) Labeled as intolerant, and 2.) Are told they are not thinking outside the box.

Its shows ignorance but unfortunately it’s a pretty typical response so I am in no way shocked by it.
