Last Saturday was Free Comic book Day 2005 and the kids first meeting with Spiderman.
No Nerds Here
We headed down to Speeding Bullet Comics my local comic shop that I have gone to since 1994. It’s the best shop in Oklahoma period. (If you visit tell Matt you saw it on azoidx.com and then just walk away crazy eyed.)
Matt (the owner) had a great setup put together. Free Comic Book Day is where tons of comics are given away across the country. It’s a way for people to get reintroduced to comics or pick up some books to try out.
I think this was the first time Parker had been to the comic shop but I believe its Alex’s second time.
We met Thomas and Jennifer and their daughter Abby (who is Alex’s age) up there at 2:00 just as Spiderman arrived. Now Spiderman must be having some tough times because he looked as though he wasn’t keeping in good shape, and it appeared as though his suit wasn’t in the best of shape. You would think now that he has joined the New Avengers he would have access to borrow some money from millionaire Tony Stark (Iron Man) if he was down and out.
Even though this was not the most believable Spiderman I have seen by far; the boys seemed convinced. Although later at home Parker, my very observant two year old, did mention that Spiderman didn’t look “very hard”, I said what do you mean and he beat his chest and then made some muscles and said “he didn’t look like this”. I had to laugh.
The kids all got their free Spiderman books signed by the less than fit Spiderman. The kids ate it up.
Parker went right up to him and started talking to him. Spiderman asked him his name and he said “Parker” and Spidey said “That is a great name”. Parker was named after Peter Parker Spiderman’s alter-ego and Parker knows it.
Alex was pretty excited too. Although a bit shy, he did go up and talk Spiderman and get his book signed and was very proud to have his own comic book.
The free comic book selection this year was excellent. Lot of indie books and stuff you don’t normally see. In fact the major company’s books were rather weak this time. There was very little from them.
We could get 10 comics each so I got 10, and I had Brandi get 10, and Alex and Parker got a few each.
I have yet to dig in and read them but they all look pretty good.
