I went to a screening of the new movie Sky High today (July 15th at the AMC Quail Springs ). While at the Bruce Campbell book signing the other day they gave out free passes.
I wanted to see the movie anyway because I thought the concept looked interesting and most of all Bruce Campbell was in it. Put Bruce in anything and I will watch it.
It turns out the movie was excellent; I describe it as a Harry Potter with Super Heroes. The difference is it’s much more fun, clever, witty, well written, and better acted than any Potter movie.
First of all the movie was funny, not cheesy funny, but straight funny. It parodied throughout, the typical super hero comic book stereotypes, but again not in a lame way but in the clever parody fashion of Weird Al Yankovic or the Naked Gun movies.

Sky High is a teen movie of course but as an adult I loved it despite. The movie parodied teen flicks from the 80’s, and featured music from that time period which fit perfectly. If you are a child of the 80’s and remember movies like 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, or Better off Dead then you will really enjoy Sky High.
This is not one of the lame modern teen movies at all. Sky High actually made sense and didn’t rely on bad sex jokes or skin to gain the audiences attention.
Sky High was clean and completely vulgar free. If you are one that has to have their filth fix you will still like this movie. The last thing you think about is its lack of trash. I didn’t even realize it until I was walking out of the theatre.
The story was smart and well done. I didn’t sit there predicting every move and notice any plot twists ahead of time, and even if I could have I wouldn’t notice because there was just so much going on and I was busy laughing from the clever lines.
Bruce Campbell was excellent and I wish he had been given more screen time. His Character, Coach Boomer (aka. Sonic Boom), could have even been more fun had he been used more.
The kids featured in the movie didn’t look “Hollywood familiar” to me, (maybe Disney Channel familiar but still not that well known) and I think that helped me enjoy the picture more. I wasn’t looking at a Lindsey Lohan thinking about how “celebrity” she is and having my stomach turn.
The big name stars made up the supporting characters, and in this movie the supporting characters almost stole the show. Bruce Campbell, Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Lynda Carter, Cloris Leachman and the kids in the Hall guys, Kevin McDonald, Dave Foley really made the movie. Campbell, McDonald, and Foley played teachers at Sky High and were the most fun and my favorite characters.
I do high-ly recommend this movie. If you like the genre you will love this movie.
I’m still coming off my sky high high.
