Day 3: Saturday At The Cottage In The Woods

Day 3 the lake - d3_IMG_3247_sm.jpg Saturday we headed out from Ginny’s house to her Cottage for a get together with the entire family. Just about everyone was there.

The cottage was great fun and as always a nice remote and relaxing place. We all ate and just spent time getting caught up with each others lives.

My Aunt Linda and Uncle Randy and family from Arizona were still in Wisconsin during the first couple of days of our visit. It was great to be able to see them even thought it was a short.

My newly married cousin Shawn was there with his wife who I met for the first time.

There was time that day for the usual philosophical, political, and theological discussions that I always have with my uncles. I’ve realized that one of the major fun and interesting activities of my trips to Wisconsin all these many years have been those deep conversations and debates.

We all reminisced about events that have happened at the Cottage over the years, for example the time Uncle Gary and my brother Noel flipped the canoe. As they were coming back to shore, I believe my mom wanted to take a photo, Gary attempted his trademark wave, but that was just too much for the small canoe and they both went overboard. Uncle Gary lost his glasses and we still joke that they are out there and we should go find them.

The kids had fun playing in and around the lake and riding in the paddle boat.

Parker discovered why it’s good not to lean over the edge of a boat. He was sitting in the paddle boat on the shore holding a row boat ore and apparently must have dropped it over the edge.

When he tried to get it he flipped out of the boat and landed in the water head first. I had just glanced over and saw his two legs sticking up in the air from the other side of the boat. He was stuck with his head on the lake shore bottom under water and his body sticking straight up resting on the side of the boat.

Travis my Cousin Lisa’s husband was sitting nearby and grabbed him up.

Parker’s hair was covered in sand and debris but he was in good spirits and not at all upset; I had been expecting the worse in scared outbursts. He just looked up and smiled at us and said, “I fell in the water…”, and laughed about it.

That night we all met up on the farm and had our traditional bon fire up at the mobile home.

Uncle Gary bought the mobile home, in 1987 I think and it’s been our meeting place ever since. As kids we always stayed there with Gary telling stories and looking at the sky.

What I love about the farm is that the night sky is packed full of stars and you can clearly see the milky-way which just amazes me. We don’t even come close to seeing that here in the city. Some nights I went outside and just looked at them for hours.

My Uncle Randy always took this opportunity to do fireworks when his family was on the farm. On the drive through Missouri there are some excellent firework warehouses that are packed with every firework you could imagine all at unbelievable prices.

Last year I started this same tradition when our family comes to visit and again this year I bought some. Randy was a bit jealous I think ;)

I had 12 artillery style fireworks that I got for $6.95 each set of 6. They were great this year. One set was absolutely excellent and I wish I would have just gotten two of them. The other set of 6 was alright but the bursts were not as spectacular as the other.

My cousin Tyler was helping me try and get two lit at the same time. We managed to pull it off the second try once we realize that one fuse was much faster than the other.

We only had one close call where I didn’t get a shell all the way down the barrel and it ended up not getting high enough in the air and exploded very close to us.

Here are some photos from day 3….
