Box Office Slump Not Simply Bad Movies

New York Times article "Movie Slump Stirs Tensions in Hollywood".

I agree that sub par movies are partially to blame, but not entirely ...I think people view a Hollywood movie differently today than in the past; thinking in terms of "is this worthy of a big screen experience" or is this movie a renter.

DVD quality has to be a big factor also. You can see a movie in widescreen and crystal clear so it really makes you think, "is it worth seeing in the theatre?". Also access to renting these films are easier and more convenient than every before.

And let’s not forget that larger high quality, even widescreen TV’s are more common and more realistically priced than ever before. The same goes for sound.

Big screens, theatre quality visuals and sound in the home, easy access to movies, and lower prices contribute to the slump I think even more than crappy movies. This is especially true considering that the slump at the box office coincides with these new technologies being within the grasp of the average person.

I think a way to gain back theatre goers isnt simply hoping hollywood will make better movies, but getting down to better prices at the box office. I go to the theatre when its the cheapest possible price even sometimes waiting for the dollar movies to pick it up.

I notice that often the theatres are empty. Theatres should look at it like airlines; whatever it takes to keep the seats full all the time. Lower prices and high quality experience could do it.
