Vacation Journal Day 9 (8-05-2005): Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee

The title is my obscure movie quote of the day. Anyway this is day 9 of my ongoing summer vacation journal, and this day we woke up and decided to go to Milwaukee. I had never been neither had Brandi and my mom.

It turns out Milwaukee is much more beautiful than I had imagined or their reputation had previously awarded it.

We parked across from the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Quadracci Pavilion, which is an a piece of art itself, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. We walked over to the museum to get closer to Lake Michigan which comes right up to the building. It’s a beautiful view of the building pointing out across the lake.

The Milwaukee Art Museum houses nearly 20000 works of Old Masters
and 19th and 20th century art.

While we were there we saw a bunch of people looking at the top of the building at the massive bars that form two large wing like structures that resembles a whales tail. We couldn’t figure out what they were looking at. What we didn’t notice is that those flaps where moving and come all the way down at noon and back up. It’s so slow we were looking at them and didn’t even notice it until it was pointed out by someone passing by who recognized our confusion.

From there we made our way to the river walk downtown.

The river walk area of Milwaukee is beautiful. We ate at a place called The Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery. I had an awesome burger. Our table was right next to a gate that goes down to a private landing for boats. These are all along the river and people can rent them. They are able to park their boats and eat, shop, etc...

We walked all around downtown. On our travels we stopped by St. John’s Roman Catholic Church and went inside to check it out. This was also an opportunity to take a rest. It was very beautiful full of ornate stain glass and a large unusually stylized three dimensional sculpture of Jesus on the cross. It was done in sort of a Picasso style; made up of sharp angles and odd shapes with distorted dimensions.

Next on our list of things to do was visit the Miller Brewery. Milwaukee was the king of breweries with of many different ones but over time most have shutdown except for Miller.

I won’t go into a detailed description of the tour, but it was fun and we got to taste different types of beers as much as we wanted. It was also the 150th anniversary of miller beer.

Here are some photos from the day:

Here they are down.

A glass sculpture inside the museum. I didn’t catch the artists name.

I love Milwaukee. Of all of the cities I've visited for a more than a couple of days, I think Milwaukee is one of my all-time favorites. Such neat architecture, great food, and excellent beer.

Rock Bottom is pretty good and has a great location, but if you ever go back to Milwaukee go to Milwaukee Ale house. They have the best beer in town and free wi-fi, and also have a great deck that is on the river (they are probably about 15 or so blocks south of where Rock Bottom is at) --- http://www.ale-house.com/

The glass sculpture is by Dale Chihuly

This is the same guy that did all of the glass art at the OKC Museum of Art...

I thought so but for some reason I thought I had seen a different name. But it figures it was him.

Thanks!

Is it my imagination or did a picture disappear ;-) hehehe

Glad you enjoyed our fair city. Looks like you hit some nice highlights! Next time you return to Milwaukee, let me know and I'll take you on a tour. I took training from Historic Milwaukee, Inc. this past winter and give tours of the various neighborhoods throughout the city.
Adiós,
Gary

thanks! I know we didnt see half of what Milwaukee has to offer.
